The purpose of the Digital Foundations exam is to assess a candidate’s proficiency in essential digital literacy and computer skills. Candidates are expected to have a solid foundation in understanding the basic functions and components of a computer system—including how hardware and software interact and troubleshooting simple issues—while also demonstrating competence in word processing, spreadsheet management, multimedia presentation design, and effective web research. Additionally, candidates must exhibit best practices in digital communication, recognize cybersecurity threats, and understand ethical and legal responsibilities in technology use. It is recommended that candidates have at least 100 hours of combined instruction and hands-on experience in digital skills before taking the exam. Achieving this certification signifies a candidate’s readiness for the digital workplace and serves as a valuable benchmark for employers in evaluating digital competency.

Objective Domains

Unit 1 – Computer Fundamentals

  • Understand the basic functions and components of a computer system, including how hardware and software interact and how to troubleshoot simple issues.

Unit 2 – Word Processing

  • Use word processing tools to create and format professional documents, demonstrating control over text formatting, alignment, spacing, and the inclusion of images and tables.

Unit 3 – Spreadsheets

  • Organize and perform calculations using spreadsheets, including inputting data, applying basic formulas (e.g., SUM, AVERAGE), and formatting cells for clarity.

Unit 4 – Multimedia Presentations

  • Create engaging multimedia presentations, integrating text, transitions, and media (e.g., images, audio) to effectively communicate ideas.

Unit 5 – Web Research

  • Conduct effective web searches and evaluate the reliability of online sources, distinguishing between credible and non-credible content.

Unit 6 – Digital Communication

  • Apply best practices in digital communication, including composing respectful emails, using appropriate tone and structure, and understanding professional netiquette.

Unit 7 – Cybersecurity

  • Recognize cybersecurity threats and explain safe online practices, such as creating strong passwords, identifying phishing attempts, and maintaining device security.
